Spring is that tricky season where one minute it feels like summer, and the next, you’re grabbing a jacket! The key to dressing during this in-between weather is layering—and you don’t have to spend a fortune to do it. Here are my top budget-friendly transitional pieces that will keep you stylish and comfortable as the temperatures fluctuate.
1. Lightweight Cardigans & Sweaters
A thin knit cardigan is perfect for layering over a tank top or t-shirt when it’s cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Pair it with cute pink jeans, a comfy camisole, neutral sandals, and fun earrings. Find a fun print, or look for neutral colors like beige, gray, or pastel shades that match multiple outfits. Bonus: Many budget-friendly retailers like Target, Old Navy, Temu, and Shein all have great options under $25!
2. Denim Jackets
A classic denim jacket is a must-have transitional piece that instantly elevates any outfit. Pair it with some fun pants(mine are sold out, but similar here), a white tank, wedges, and tassel earrings to complete the look. Whether you’re wearing a sundress, leggings, or jeans, a denim jacket adds structure without feeling too heavy. Denim jackets are a great staple for layered outfit looks as well as your capsule wardrobe! Check out places like Walmart, Amazon, thrift stores, or Temu and Shein for affordable finds. I found mine at Sam’s Club!
3. Button-Up Shirts
A classic button-up shirt (found mine at the thrift store!) is one of the most versatile layering pieces you can own. Wear it open over a tank top, with hot pink shorts (a Target find but unfortunately sold out, these are similar here!) and cute sandals. Opt for neutral or pastel shades that scream spring! This piece fits perfectly into the chic casual outfits category while also working for a professional setting. Affordable options can be found at H&M, Old Navy, and even thrift stores for a unique find. Let’s not forget about my personal favorites, Amazon, Temu, and Shein!
4. Maxi & Midi Dresses with Layers
A flowy dress works year-round if you know how to style it! For spring, pair a floral midi dress with a light jacket and sneakers for a casual vibe. Finish off the look with some cute beaded earrings. This look embodies spring semi-casual outfits that are effortless and trendy. Swap out sneakers for ankle boots and throw on a belt for a more polished look.
5. Lightweight Scarves
A scarf isn’t just for winter! A lightweight scarf adds a pop of color and an extra layer of warmth on breezy spring days. Look for chiffon or cotton scarves that can be styled multiple ways. Wear it with linen pants (these are a Lilly P sold-out print, but here is a similar pair here), a white tank, glittery sandals (mine came from TJ Maxx but these are similar here) and earrings, and a denim jacket for those chilly days.
6. Ankle Boots & Sneakers
When the weather is unpredictable, you need versatile shoes. Ankle boots like these cheetah print Tom’s work well for chilly mornings, and classic white sneakers keep things casual yet stylish. Pair them with white jeans, an oversized leopard top (mine came from a boutique one of my friends owns, but you can find similar here) and black wooden earrings and you are all set! Stores like Target, ASOS, and Nordstrom Rack often have great sales on stylish yet affordable footwear.
7. Cropped or Utility Jackets
A cropped blazer or utility jacket can take your outfit from simple to chic in seconds. I paired mine with a tulle skirt, white tank, leopard belt, shoes, and earrings. These pieces are light enough for warmer days but offer coverage for cooler evenings—perfect for transitional dressing!
Budget-Friendly Layering Pro Tip:
Mix and match what you already own! Before shopping, take inventory of what’s in your closet and find new ways to layer existing pieces. Adding just one or two new transitional items can refresh your wardrobe without overspending.
