Tips for Authentic, Heartfelt Couple Photography
Love is best told through the little moments—the stolen glances, the laughter shared over an inside joke, the way two hands naturally find each other in a crowded room. That’s what makes capturing a love story in photos so special—it’s not about perfect poses or forced smiles, but about telling your unique journey through images.
Jimmy and I recently had the opportunity to collaborate with Magnolia Legacy Photography, and the experience was more than just a photoshoot—it was a reflection of the love story that God has written for us. We wanted our photos to feel warm, joyful, and true to who we are as a couple, and that’s exactly what we got. Whether you’re planning a professional couples’ session or just capturing everyday moments, here are some tips to help you document your own love story beautifully.
1. Choose a Meaningful Location
The best couple photos feel personal. Instead of picking a random scenic spot, think about places that hold special meaning in your relationship.
For us, the kitchen was an easy choice. Cooking together has always been a part of our story—whether it’s baking cookies on a cozy night in, playfully fighting over who gets the last bite, or just making a mess (mostly me, let’s be honest). The kitchen represents laughter, love, and teamwork—three things that define our relationship.
If you’re planning a photoshoot, consider places like:
❤️ The spot where you had your first date (ours was a local Mexican restaurant! You can read about it in this post here)
❤️ A favorite coffee shop or bookstore you love visiting together
❤️ Your own home, where you’re most you
2. Focus on the Moments, Not the Poses
Some of the best photos come when you’re not even thinking about the camera. Instead of stiff, overly structured poses, focus on interacting naturally with your partner.
During our session, we didn’t just “stand and smile.” We baked cookies, sneaked bites of chocolate chips, and shared those little playful looks that made the whole experience feel real. When Jimmy made me laugh so hard I couldn’t keep a straight face, those were the moments that stood out most in our photos.
💡 Pro tip: Whisper something silly to make your partner laugh. It instantly creates a relaxed, genuine vibe in your photos! We tend to make each other laugh just by looking at one another!
3. Capture the Details
A love story isn’t just about the big moments—it’s also about the little things:
✨ The way your hands intertwine
✨ That soft, knowing look you exchange when no one else is watching
✨ The way your partner brushes your hair away or leans in close
The beauty of photography is in these small details. Some of my favorite shots from our kitchen session weren’t even full-body portraits—they were close-ups of our hands decorating the cookies, the way Jimmy looked at me mid-laugh, and the way our arms wrapped around each other effortlessly.
Ask your photographer (or if you’re taking the photos yourself, set up a tripod) to zoom in on the small, intimate moments—they tell the real story.
4. Dress in a Way That Feels Like You
When choosing outfits, forget about what’s “trendy” and go for what makes you feel comfortable and confident.
For our photos, I wanted a cozy, effortless vibe—something that felt like us at home. We took photos in two separate outfits. I wanted to showcase my favorite color, so I opted for a soft pink sweater and jeans, while Jimmy kept it simple with a matching pink polo and jeans. For our second outfit we chose just plain white t-shirts and jeans. The goal was to feel relaxed and natural, not like we were dressed up for a formal event.
💡 Pro tip: Stick to neutral or complementary tones so your outfits don’t overpower the emotion in the photos.
5. Let Your Love Shine
At the end of the day, a love story isn’t just captured in pictures—it’s lived every day. When you focus on having fun, being present, and celebrating the love you share, the magic will naturally show up in the photos.
Every couple’s story is different, and that’s what makes each session unique. For us, it was about capturing our playful, faith-filled relationship, where love and laughter always go hand in hand. It wasn’t about getting the “perfect” shot—it was about reflecting the life we’re building together, with God at the center of it all.
So if you’re planning a couples’ session, remember this:
📸 Choose a meaningful location
📸 Focus on the in-between moments
📸 Capture the little details
📸 Wear something that feels you
📸 Most importantly, just be yourselves!
Because love, in its most natural and beautiful form, is the best story you can tell.
